Bomar port light replacement

Postby GreenSailor » December 19th, 2015, 3:43 pm

I would like to replace my port plight on a 406. Has anyone done this? I removed the screws but the port light appears to be glued or embedded, can the light be pried out. I assume that the outer part attached to the hull is glued. Any help?

Bomar port light replacement

It'll be bedded in, probably with caulking. You'll just have to carefully pry a little at a time. Start at one spot, lift a little, insert something to keep that section lifted, then lift the adjacent area and so on. Use something thin to get started then work your way to a thicker tool. I sometimes use a utility knife or stainless steel wire to cut the caulking underneath first. Heating up the frame will help to soften the caulking so it releases easier. Be careful not to burn or cut into the gel.

Bomar port light replacement

As a follow up, have you removed the interior frame of the port light. I removed the screws but don't know how to remove the frame. Perhaps a small pry bar would work, any suggestions?

Bomar port light replacement

Ya just take it slow and easy. I don't remember ever running into a hidden latch or fastener in any portlight that I've removed. You can also try contacting Bomar and emailing them a picture of the unit for advice on whether there is a specific way to remove that particular frame.
