leaking pressure relief valve

Postby drmax » July 16th, 2019, 10:11 am

Hello. I have a 1987 Carver 32. Behind the lower helm, is what I have identified as the pressure relief valve for steering. I see the 3 hoses coming out of the back of the valve. Where I see oil and a little bit of bubbling, is out of this cap on the side. The cap has a slot which would appear you can remove. What I need to know...is there a packing that can be replaced for this cap? If so, I need a part number for the packing. I have not attempted to tighten, as I am unsure if this for some type of adjustment cap as this is a valve. I am maintenance literate, but I want to know what I am up against before I rip and tear. I will attempt to load a photo of someone elses valve that I found. I didnt take a photo of mine.

I do not believe that's a pressure relief valve. The only 'pressure relief' valve that I'm familiar with is on the steering cylinder at the rudders. I *think* that's just a cap that you're looking at, but I'd have to see a diagram to make sure. I think I have a graphic somewhere that shows that whole thing in an exploded diagram. I think they typically leak at the shaft seal, so make sure that's where the fluid is coming from.

Hello. I found an IPC of this without part numbers. I found what I am describing, is the actual filter element which is inside the valve body. It is a cartridge that goes in the body. There is one on each side. It shows packings, without part numbers. Darn....

Not sure which helm unit you have, but here's a couple diagrams. #9 in the second one are bleed screws. The rest are the valves.

Here is the whole system. The relief valve is usually down by the reservoir or the cylinder.

And now I'm sure what I have is a H-50. A seal kit would not include packing for the cartridge. If you look at item #8, you'll see the parts that go into the block. This is similar to an H-50, only an H-50 I believe has only one filter. So whatever those packings are (which they so inconveniently did not list) is what I need.
And thank you for posting those IPC's. I did find this awhile ago and printed it.

Aren't those just O-rings that seal those parts?

Spoke with seastar. Apparently the part I'm describing is part of the helm. There is no specific packing listed. Will have to go to napa and have a look. Otherwise will have to redo the system with new style...$$$, or by a refurbished unit.

Not entirely sure until I pull it apart. But by looking at an H-50 for sale online, this part the hoses are attached to is built into the helm. (and I've been calling it the wrong name. It's a pressure relief screw and it a common leakage point. Now just have to find the correct packing part numbers.

Try a place that does hydraulic cylinders/lines/pumps for machinery, loaders etc....that may just be a generic part, if you can show them.
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.
