396 Transport from Landlocked Lake to Pacific, Pictures

Postby StanG » September 28th, 2019, 12:24 am

In my quest to purchase my 396 I had little luck finding good info on what was required to disassemble for transport load height. Over the last few weeks I successfully got it out of a landlocked lake in northern New Mexico and it was Splashed two weeks later in Southern Ca. In the end I was under budget and with some luck had no real issues. Here is how it went:

1) Disassembled/loosened everything possible before having it pulled from the lake, isinglass, canvas, bridge seating, removed all necessary hatches/covers.

2) Contracted with Transport to haul out using a water launch Hydraulic trailer. I was required to move it into the Marina dry storage so that the State could de-contaminate before transporting across state lines.

Check out this Hydraulic trailer, It's extremely nice! makes my 40' boat look small. These guys had to make a 12 hour round trip for 1hr of work to pull the boat out of the water up to storage. (same company that transported)

3) Finished Disassembling in dry storage, removed Props, Rudders, Hardtop, Radar Arch, Venturi (helm windshield) and the Helm. By removing the Helm I was able to get the load ~10" lower.

4) Contracted a crane to place the boat on the transport trailer (different trailer than was used to pull from water) and to lift the hardtop, radar arch and helm. All were stored on the boat, helm in front, hardtop and radar arch in back.

Ready to roll out..

2 days later arrived in San Diego

5) Basically reversed the disassembly process and did required maintenance, bottom paint, Zinc's, and I had it buffed out ($OUCH$).

Finally Splashed!, First time the boat has seen salt water.

We took it for a nice long ride in the Pacific yesterday and it ran very well.

Really nice yacht. I found it interesting that the loaded it stern first on the trailer for hauling. I guess, looking at the pic again the shape of the trailer determined how it was loaded and hauled. Good luck with your new yacht. I hope you have many fine adventures aboard.

Nice! :captain2:

Definitely are a pain to move due to bridge clearance not to mention costly. My budget was ruined after the diassembly/assembly/haul from a landlocked lake. Then again since the boat was in Quebec and delivered to Quebec I saved a $hitload of taxes as there are zero taxes on used boats here in the province when they change hands. :-D Rather involved and seems complicated but if you know what you are doing it really is designed for this, after all, this is how they are shipped from the factory to the original owner. There are a few pictures of the disassembly in my signature.
Cheers, Hans

Great post, glad it all worked out. I trust the engines are closed/fresh water cooled?

Good stuff, nice post.... enjoy your boat.....it is truly amazing to me the small lakes in those areas where you would not expect such large boats to be......
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Here's a picture of the trailer, you can see the two areas in the front for the prop shafts to sit in. The boat is actually sat on 2x6 boards directly on the trailer (see two 2x6's stacked on one cross-member) with the pads adjusted to support and then its strapped down. Note that the trailer stretches for shorter or longer boats.

Actually they are open... I have added Eddie Marine Engine Flushing Tee's and plan to flush well and store with NAPA Anti-Rust MAC 1300 for now. The boat was on a lake at 5700' elevation for the past 12 years and the previous owner winterized by pulling the inlet lines placing them in a 5 gallon bucket with antifreeze, it should be much easier with the flushing tees.

My experience with these gas marine setups is that the weakest point is the risers/heat exchanges so I'm hoping this helps extend there life (they are original)

I have priced installing heat exhangers and I may do so with the after market Mr Cool #3860907 Volvo Penta Heat Exchanger's for $535.00 Ea, will need to sort out the correct routing, reservoir and brackets.
