USB Outlet Options

USB is changing and getting more powerful, charging laptops and quick charge on many phones not to mention USB-c which seems to be slowly taking over as the norm. I converted a few of my 12v outlets to standard USB several years back however the power output is not up there with todays standards so I went shopping for todays stuff.

If you are an Apple fan the you will want PD USB-c units which stands for Power Deliver. This charges your phone or laptop at 9v or 12v as opposed to 5 volts yet can deliver standard 5v to any device plugged into it. There is also a similar standard USB type which is referred to as QC-3.0 (Quick Charge)

That being said here is what I have installed replacing exiting 12v outlets, 110v outlets and simple plug-in adapter to supply USB power.

I'm not an apple fan but who knows who else might adopt the PD USB-c as a standard. I put the older 1A and 2A outlets near the berths and helms for convenience and use them often. Might do this upgrade as it also has the integrated voltmeter rather than the separate units like the existing ones. BTW, it's nice to see that house voltage no matter where you're at in the boat, because you always are aware of the house battery status.

Mine is installed in the salon where we plug in our phones and laptop to charge most of the time unless we are under way. It is in a location which is very visible when in the boat so yes it is nice to see house bank voltage at a glance. The others are mounted on my dash which gives me instant reading of my starting batteries. Really nice feature for sure.

Only drawback is you do not want these mounted in the sleeping quarters as the light will most likely be bothersome when sleeping.

I think most have already gone this route including Samsung. USB-c is starting to show up in cars also. They can carry more power and can be inserted any way as opposed to USB which can only be inserted right side up. Just makes for a better overall and sturdier connector.

Had that issue in both the boat and the truck. Took a black sharpie and went over the LEDs - especially the bright blue ones. Darkens them sufficiently where it's not annoying but you can still see them just fine.
