Carver didn't install filters for a good reason. If the tank has proper inlet air - which comes from the vent line - and a good sewage treatment product, the smell will not be present. I used a product called NoFlex digestor which you can buy through Amazon or many other distributors. Here's a "cut and paste" brief explanation on how it works.

(Zaal NoFlex Digestor is an environmentally safe choice for your boat's portable toilet and holding tank. Noflex reacts with anaerobic sludge and water to neutralize sulfide odors and releases proteins that encourage the growth of aerobic bacteria.)

I also learned a lot about controlling boat odors by reading Peggy Hall's book titled - A Boat Owner’s Guide to Marine Sanitation Systems and Other Sources of Aggravation and Odor.

Hope this helps you, it worked for me.

I forgot to mention another product I've used is “Happy Camper”. It worked just as well for me as NoFlex and the price was much less. Some users of "Happy Camper" suggest it didn't control odor as well as NoFlex did.

This is the cheapest place I've found for the no flex.
