Swim deck damaged from storm.

Postby lz33w7 » November 20th, 2024, 11:48 am

Hi guys,

Apologies, this is my first boat and I’m new to boating…only had her a couple of months and I’m in the process of fixing her up. Had a bad storm roll through in Texas with gust up to 80 mph….I just filed a claim as my swim deck is damaged. Waiting on the estimate but is there a chance the damage goes deeper than just the swim
Deck?

Welcome! It’s a terrific group with tons of knowledge that they are willing to share. Hard to tell if the damage could be more extensive. If it were me, I would be sure that the insurance adjuster has extensive marine experience and depending where the damages does the boat need to be pulled in order to thoroughly look underneath. Let’s see what others have to say.

It will all depend on what shape the swim deck is in....it may already be rotten inside for example, make sure your person looks at the transom inside, it looks like from the pics it is a bolt on and there will be the immediate area of the fasteners to check and supports to check......
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

Ya I'd be asking for it to be hauled out, the mounts checked, and the areas where the mounts attach to the transom. As mentioned, it wouldn't surprise me if the platform core is toast which may have a bearing on how the insurance company will compensate you. It may be a good time to consider removal and a complete re-core if required, or consider a new replacement extended platform if that's to your liking. Swimplatforms.com might have the unit for your model.

Hello friends,

From the damage posted, with just an in water estimate, it will be $10,000.00 usd….could be more. They want to haul it out and power wash the bottom to see if there is more damage, which is good. Insurance would only total the boat at 70% repair cost of the total value of the boat. They said the swim deck would be better quality than what is currently on there.

Kindly,
v/r,
Stephen

I have the same swim deck on my 87 Mariner. I will be removing it to recore next week. In its past it had a dingy mount that was removed and the holes were not properly filled so it has a couple of soft spots. I is out of the water at the moment so it is a good time to fix it. Yours looks repairable, but at todays labor rates it would get expensive unless you do it yourself. It looks to be an easy removal, just a few bolts. It has some wood laminated to the fiberglass inside. Although I would bet your transom is good, it to me would be a good idea to haul it out and have a close inspection especially if the insurance agrees. That high of an estimate must include a new swim deck? If you toss your old swim deck and don't use the ladder I may be interested in it. Good luck and sorry you had the misfortune.
