Just 1987 3607 Purchased and noticed

Postby RWS » March 18th, 2019, 11:44 pm

We just purchased a 1987 3067 aft and noticed what appears to be old water stains on the v- berth ceiling. What might cause this and what do I need to check, had boat surveyed and surveyor didn't mention it. Wouldn't bother me but I know the boat was used for day boating and fair weather and we plan to use it for weekends and I'm sure we will be getting rained on from time to time.

Check around the forward hatch. Many times that would be the source of leaks in that area. You may need to pull and reseat the hatch.

Could be as simple as not having closed the hatch or latching it a few times. Your best bet is to touch and monitor the area after heavy rains and go from there

Something that I noticed during my current project (deck core replacement) is that when Carver installed the wood that supports the headliner, (and really all cabin ceiling trim), they screwed directly into the bottom layer of fiberglass. What this meant on my boat, was that when my core got wet, those screws allowed some water in which caused water stains on some of my upholstery.

Now- this would be a worse case, and if that problem existed previously in your boat, it may have already been rectified and you could just be seeing the lasting effect. It could just be a simple case of the hatch being left unlatched or not fully closed allowing water in at some point in the past.

Thanks,
Ben in SC

Is it on the high part of the ceiling closer to the hatch or farther toward the bow where it's lower? If it's like mine, you have two rope deck pipes just aft of the pulpit. They might need to be resealed to the deck.

In the V-berth (if it's like mine) the headliner is just glued directly to the fiberglass. In the salon and the aft cabin, they use the wood supports as you describe.
