You should be able to remove the pulley with a proper pulley puller but be careful that you don't warp it pulling it off or putting it on. Note its position on the shaft so it's in the exact same place for proper alignment.
Why is it being replaced? Have you considered sending it to a rebuilder?

I would just take it to a rebuilder near you if there is one still doing this type of work.....they will be able to take care of that and answer all your questions. Maybe just a small part ( diode ) and not a total rebuild. Be sure to remind them it is marine, but they should notice.
Some of the pulleys are easy but some will require the correct puller and as has been said the alignment needs to be considered or you will have belt trouble. Good thing about diesels is you don't have high rpm to deal with in regards to alignment accuracy, still needs to be considered though.
