ALTERNATOR REPLACEMENT - CARVER 455

ALTERNATOR NEEDS REPLACEMENT: I need to replace one of my Cummins 6CTA 8.3L alternators in my Carver 455, and I have a couple of questions for anybody in the know. 1) Has anyone done this and reused the pulley? Buying one with the pulley adds almost $200. 2) Not sure of the amperage output, but I've been told it should be 130 amp? Anyone know for sure? 3) Anything else I should know about this job? Thanks!

Not sure about the pulley, but the output is listed at 70 amps for that particular engine.

I would confirm what you have first by looking for a label on it. They use at least two brands of alternators with different outputs. Bosch and Delco were popular, and there were 12V and 24V options. In any case, you must replace it with one of the same voltage and output or you'll need to change wiring if the output is higher. I find that diesel applications tend to have higher output alternators than their gasoline counterparts which are typically 65-70 amps.

You should be able to remove the pulley with a proper pulley puller but be careful that you don't warp it pulling it off or putting it on. Note its position on the shaft so it's in the exact same place for proper alignment.

Why is it being replaced? Have you considered sending it to a rebuilder?

I would just take it to a rebuilder near you if there is one still doing this type of work.....they will be able to take care of that and answer all your questions. Maybe just a small part ( diode ) and not a total rebuild. Be sure to remind them it is marine, but they should notice.

Some of the pulleys are easy but some will require the correct puller and as has been said the alignment needs to be considered or you will have belt trouble. Good thing about diesels is you don't have high rpm to deal with in regards to alignment accuracy, still needs to be considered though.
