Raw water system cleaner

Postby Youghster » March 16th, 2023, 9:58 pm

I'm thinking to clean the heat exchangers on my 5.7 Crusaders. I saw a utube video that featured "Barnacle Buster" and, if it works, I'm game to give it a try. Do any of you skippers have experience with this or a similar kind of suck it up and soak it product ?

I tee off the main intake strainer with another valve as a flush point and an emergency bilge pump. I run a diluted solution of Mariatic acid and fresh water, (about 20 % acid) thru the cooling system , let it sit for 15 min. And run engines normal to flush out the acid. All kinds of junk comes out. I do this about once a year. Eng. temp’s usually drop 10 deg. Caution! Don’t use too much acid or let it sit too long. It can eat up the solder on the cooling bundles.

Thanks for the tip. We used muriatic acid in cooling systems of continuous miners underground so that was my first thought. Then I saw a product designed for the job and wondered ? 80 / 20 for 15 minutes Thanks again
