I have a 1985 28 foot Voyager which I'm setting up for trolling solo. With the autopilot, I'm hoping to spend most of my time on the back deck and I'm hoping I can mount the control unit back there so I can make fine adjustments without having to run into the lower driving station every time she veers off course. I'm curious to know where anyone with a setup like mine mounted the compass, pump, control unit and head, etc. Anyone mount the control unit to be controlled from the back deck? Thanks for any help!

I installed the EV150 on my Mariner 330 last year. Extremely happy with the result.
The EV150 does NOT require rudder transducer, my system does not use it. Attached to the Garmin 94 through a databus, works very well.
You must know what helm you have, what type of hydraulic system, and ram size. See viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8015&p=63304#p63304 for additional info.
All SeaStar helms have the required check valves for an autopilot system (this is what i have). Some Helms would require an additional double piloted check valve to operate properly.
My system does not have a reservoir, i cannot advise specifically on this setup, but i know it is do-able.
My biggest PITA on installation was the hydraulic adapters from the pump to the steering lines (mostly self induced), and especially the data bus set-up...additional Garmin data bus cables are a ridiculous $50+. You will need to figure out and customize your data bus to your equipment.
All in:
$2200 (minus a $200 rebate at the time) for the EV15
~$200 hydraulic lines, fittings, fluid, helm servicing adapter...etc. (lots of extra parts...fittings & hyd hoses)
~$200 data bus connections/cables...etc.

On my Mariner, the pump and Flux valve (compass sensor) are all behind the helm, working in "the hole" sucked, but i never had to route anything through anywhere. Most other systems (best i can tell) would require the rudder transducer wired connection - again, EV system has connections for, but does not require rudder position.

Good luck! I am thrilled with the performance of the EV150 on the Great Lakes, best investment.

Hello 2828 owners - I recently purchased a '93 located at Home Port Marina in Ozona FL. The boat has sat in a covered slip for the last 15 years without moving, used as weekend cottage. The previous owner sold it cheap to the neighboring slip boat owner who only wanted all the electronics and the auto nav - everything was stripped out and then I bought the ship for pennies. I'm in the process of replacing everything with modern electronics as well as restoring and modernizing the whole boat inside and out. I'm only able to work on the boat a 4-5 days per month and I'm 3 months in.
Mechanically the vessel was fairly sound, I performed a full service and tune up on motors and drives, replaced one starter, exhaust manifold, 4" extension and riser were grown shut with barnacles - replaced, replaced belts, ect.
I'm upgrading the chart plotter to a Garmin 1243 SXV (still researching best transducer), adding a Garmin 743 SXV for nav/radar, pole mounted antennae, Garmin GMR 18 xHD radar, Garmin night eye IR camera and monitor, Maratron tank monitor, Garmin Reactor Auto Nav controller and pump.
The helm had been "messed" with to the point it could be fixed or rebuilt. I was able to find a new old stock Hynautic H55 in Brasil and I imported it. These units are impossible to find at any cost and this new, in the factory original box was less than $400 even with the tariffs and fees. I've installed it and it's working well.
I had the exterior buffed and detailed professionally - not super happy with results but I wasn't there to see it finished before paying. I stripped the interior and flooring - almost completed, I removed all the upholstery for cleaning and it is now replaced, rewired many misc cicuits and replaced all the power outlets and switches, replaced all the interior lighting with some pretty cool LED spots and strips, I've approved the quote for a Fusion stereo with main head and remote controllers for helm and aft deck - it's going to ROCK on the wife's orders lol, I've installed LED lighting on the exterior as well as underwater lighting, I'm having sea deck custom flooring installed from the swim deck to the anchor platform, new standard horizon transceiver, new search light, more....
So.....I've done a bit of research myself on the auto nav options. As I am 100% Garmin AND my trusted Tech Guy is Garmin fluent I went with Garmin auto nav. Parts in hand just need the time to install. I'd be happy to share my experience once installed and put to use. Our primary use of the boat is for cruising and fishing off shore Gulf of America, 50+ miles.
If the vessel turns out to be something we'd take a trip on my wife has been researching the Florida Mini Loop and adding a stop in Bahamas and Keys.
I'd be happy to share any information I've gained. Also, the Owner's Manual slash "Build Binder" for my boat was included and still in great shape. It is a wealth of information and I'm happy share it. Such a cool piece of history to read. Has a lot of hand written procedures for everything from cold starting to flushing the motors on the water.
I'd sure be thankful for any information you experienced 2828 operators have to share.
