Questioning factory wiring of AC in 1983 3607

Postby safeguard » May 24th, 2024, 12:27 pm

My boat manual has my AC configured with Aft AC on MAIN 1, Pump, Salon and Fwd AC on Main 2

But the reality is below, not matching the manual

Main 1 has
receptacles
receptacles
range
hot water

Main 2 has
AC pump
Salon AC (16,000 BTU)
Aft AC (6,000 BTU)
Fwd AC (6,000 BTU)

If i have all 3 AC units on, the main pops at the post (new 30a breaker) I did put a soft start on the Main Salon AC to reduce inrush current.

Why did the factory change and not put the aft AC on Main 1 as manual states?
why all 3 on one 30 amp main

Thanks in advance

Parts of that document are dated 1978 and 1979. The electrical diagrams showing the AC breakers are dated 1981 and do show the correct configuration of all the air conditioning units on AC#2 along with the HVAC water pump.

I suspect that paragraph that talks about the aft AC being on $1 was from the initial drafts.

FWIW, I used to have a 3807 with 3 AC units and they were all on the same circuit. Never had a problem with breakers tripping and when all 3 were on, pulled 29.5 amps. If I recall, my total BTU’s were a little higher than yours. Only suggestion I can give, put soft starts on the smaller ones as well, at least one of them and make that one the last one to be turned on. With the other two already on, the initial amperage spike will be a lot less.

Also, on the 'breaker popping' part...make sure the water flow is good on all three units and the condensors are clean. If not, the running units will be using too much current so when the non-running one starts it can overload the breaker and make it pop.
