1998 Carver 355 Aft Cabin Motor yacht fuel smell in cabin

Postby donbusbee » January 12th, 2026, 3:11 pm

I have a fuel smell in the cabin of my carver 355. It is in the cabin only, there is no fuel smell in the engine compartment. The fuel tanks and fuel lines are good not leaking. Looking to see if anyone else has had this problem and what the fix was.

Welcome to the forum....
I am assuming you are speaking about the aft cabin.

Warning, until you find the source, be more than extra careful and ventilate that space. Consider where the fuel tank vents are in relation to the windows. As the boat heats during the day you can get a sort of stack effect where air rises pulling air from the bilge and other areas, these boats are not sealed well for the most part.

That boat probably has the aux fuel tank in the swim platform directly behind the aft cabin which has been known to cause trouble, the fuel tank fill lines also need to be checked, along with the vent hoses. Does your boat still have that aux tank active if it still has one?
FWIW.....The above is just my opinion.

I have a aft cabin 405 which is much the same. It doesnt take much for gas fumes to be noticed. Is it the aft cabin or the salon,? At one time I did have just enough of a leak on one of the fuel selector valves was leaking just enough to be wet and didn't have any drips. If you have verified the fuel lines and valves aren't leaking I would also check on the fittings on top of the fuel tanks. Look at the inlets and outlets and also the fuel sender. Does this smell occur after a fill up? Could be over filling and if these are loose might be a culprit. And the fittings on top may be slightly loose like the screws holding sending unit. engine room atbe cause its vented enough to dissapte the fumes. Even if it doesn't smell you know it has to be coming from the fuel system somewhere.

Any follow up info regarding your issue? If you have full fuel tanks and it warms up youll get fuel smell from the vents. Any time you fill up, go for a cruse and lower your total fuel level to allow for expansion. If the fuel smell is in the aft cabin pretty sure the auxillary tank has an issue. Looking forward to your follow up on this. :beergood:
