Nova Kool RFU8000

Postby feeez » May 23rd, 2016, 3:05 pm

Hello All,

I seems that my fridge no longer runs on AC when we are plugged in to shore power. It just continues to run on DC. Not a huge problem better to be this way than opposite.

I am guessing that there must be an AC to DC converter in there. I will have to take it out and start poking around next time up at the boat.

If I am able to isolate problem who would be the Canadian source for parts? Nova Kool (so far) does not seem to be interested enough to respond to my enquiry.

Thanks

Most likely your fridge is 12 volt all the time, there is a 120 volt to 12 volt converter in it too. It's my understanding all the newer fridges are that way. Mike

There are several distributors however they won't sell direct to you but you can go through any marina. You could try Northland Supply in Keswick and ask for Bob.

thanks guys

I am familiar with Northland. I will have to clarify the specs but there are lots of AC / DC power supplies out there. Digikey sells all kinds but I will need to know what wattage is required to run the compressor. I guess I will be heaving that behemoth out of the cabinet this week and see whats back there. :banghead:

Fraser, check the simple things first before jumping the gun; check that you're actually getting 120V to the board, look for a fuse, etc...you know the drill.

I've also seen them stop working because a GFCI is popped

Will do.... I found the trouble shooting guide and I will run the drill!!

Kenny, Thanks for the reminder on the GFI. That happened to us last season, couldn't figure out why our Coffee Maker (911 situation) and microwave wouldn't power up. Sure enough the GFI had popped.

Cheers All

Kenny, do you find fridges on the same circuit as other loads on 2000 vintage and up? I've always found them to be on their own circuit but that doesn't mean anything, things get changed by OEMs and owners all the time. Certainly if it is on the same circuit as a GFI, a tripped unit could be the culprit. Then the question would be why did it trip; just a nuisance trip or a bigger issue?

I thought I would reopen this thread about my Novacool Fridge. I did confirm the Power supply was dead but it was running fine without it.

We got in the water (finally) this past week. I got the fridge up and running and everything seemed AOK, my beer was cold!!! After it had been running for a day I noticed that it would come on, run for about a minute, stop and then resume running. It would eventually turn off properly (I could hear the "click" of the thermostat). As time went by this "short cycling: got more persistent to the point that it was on and off, on and off. I decided to shut it down as I did not want to leave the boat with the fridge doing that for days on end thinking that it would not be good for the compressor.

Cheers
