Sundeck Ice Maker

Postby Wayne162 » July 23rd, 2016, 9:34 pm

Welcoming comments on the Carver factory mounted sundeck ice maker. The unit on my 405 has the water line capped behind the master state room closet that supplies the ice maker and the sink by a previous owner for unknown reasons. I am planning to reconnect the water line and after a thorough flushing see how it works. The unit itself powers up so I don't understand at this point for the cutoff? I am expecting that once water is restored I will find out!

I have a 405 also. I don't know where you live but I use my boat year round I live in tennessee and it freezes a lot here in the winter. Inside my boat, sounds like in a similar area I added a cutoff to my sundeck icemaker and sink because this can freeze in the winter. I can shut my valve disconnect the fitting to the icemaker to avoid any problems over the winter. Don't tend to need to much ice when it's in the 30's outside. Could be the owner winterized this by capping it off? Or like you said you will find out. Be glad to help further if I can

Thanks g36. My line is cut and capped off, makes me think there was a problem. I'm in Charleston SC, not much freezing here but I do plan to install a shut off valve and a in line filter.

You say it powers up, does it actually freeze the compartment?

I felt it starting to cool down but I did not let it get to freezing before I shut it down.

I would check that before going any further. No sense hooking up water at this point if it turns out you have a refrigeration issue. Turn it on and see if it freezes up the compartment completely. Stick a cup of water in there and check to see if it turns to ice in a few hours. If it doesn't you have your answer. Make sure the lever is in the up position so it doesn't call for water.

Thanks Viper, I will probably hook up the water line anyway with a shutoff as I would like use of the sink if the icemaker turns out to have an issue in the end.

If you have to replace it may I suggest an Edgestar model. You'll save a lot of $$'s. Also if you are thinking of having it repaired, I'd think again, I sunk $500.00 into a 1998 Icerette only to have quite one month after it was in the boat. Worked all winter in the shop at home, installed it in the boat and it developed a Freon leak the fridge guy says he couldn't repair. MIKE

Wayne do yourself another favor and re plumb everything with pex and watts quick fittings or shark bite fittings and put in shut off valves. Mike
