I had an overheating problem with my 2003, 8.1 VP after changing impellers a couple years ago. After changing impellers again and even the housing, it still overheated. Then I replaced the pump itself and solved the problem. Good luck

I had a similar problem with the same motor on our 2003, 360 SS. After changing impellers multiple times thinking I did something wrong, I even changed the housing. I finally had a dealer suggest changing the whole pump. That solved my problem.

Just curious if someone actually inspected the old pump to determine what actually was failing. They're pretty simple, so it could only be a handful of things.... like a broken shaft, a faulty mechanical seal, a cam problem or a housing crack are the only things I can think of offhand.

Simply wear on the housing or the front or back plate will cause leakage, these do not last forever.

I don't know if the pumps here are plastic or bronze in this case.....for future reference the plastic ones can be easily damaged by over tightening the housing fasteners.The resulting crack can be very very small so as to not even have an obvious water leak but will pull air.....now this type of failure may show itself after recent repair work.

All depends on your water conditions. Silt and sand will wear anything out in no time.

Put these on a previous boat as the Mercruiser stuff was questionable. Lasted about 1000, hours and they both bit the bullet. Can't get much tougher than these. https://www.hardin-marine.com/p-15774-s ... 2-mag.aspx

My impeller housing is metal, Johnson style pump. There was no wear lines in side at all. Almost like, after running for an hour, it will lose it's prime. My strainer baskets are bronze.

As you have 2 engines, you might consider using the pump on the 'correct' one. Just to make sure that the pump is the culprit.

I know it's an effort but just changing a pump on a hunch is also not so great for future traveling on open water. Consider it elbow grease investment into off shore confidence.
(or whatever excuse you can think of to do the job of (dis)mounting the pump twice

Hi Phrancus! Both engines are doing the problem randomly. Could be good for and 1 to 1.5 hours then...Wammo! Gotta go back to the dock.
