spotlight

Postby nightsky » August 17th, 2016, 11:48 am

Hi all. I have a '94 390 that has a breaker on the DC panel for the spotlight, but my boat doesn't have a spotlight installed. Where is the normal location on this model and year for the spotlight to be mounted? Is it reasonable to assume that the wiring pigtail for the spotlight will be found in the area that spotlight is normally mounted (bow pulpit, flybridge)? Thanks in advance for any replies.

as a start i think i would google photos of your year and model boat and check yachtworld etc. and see where other boats like yours might have the spotlight mounted. hard to say you might get lucky with wiring already there. wiring harness probably had wires pulled and options added or not added

Most generally it would have been mounted on the top railing over the bow pulpit and a plate would have been attached to the rail to mount the spot light on and the wiring would have come out of the rail underneath the plate. If it was on the fiberglass bridge overhang, there should be mounting holes and a wire exposed. It's possible the breaker may be for something else and the label wasn't changed. FYI, I find a good cordless LED hand held spot/flood light a lot more useful than the mounted out front spot/flood light. Mike

Thanks Mike. If I can't add a spotlight easily, that is without having to fish wires through a long, convoluted route, then I would probably go with the handheld option.

Nightsky, not sure if this is factory installed, however this is the location of spot light on my 390 cmy, comes with remote, however have not got it working yet.

Thanks Flinty. I've looked but couldn't find any wires dedicated to a later install for a spotlight there. Too much trouble to run wires from the FB to the pulpit so I will just get a handheld spotlight.

If you can, open the panel and look at the back of the panel and breaker. if you have a wire on the breaker and it is labeled spotlight, then the wire is more than likely in your rode locker somewhere. If there is no wire, look for an unattached wire (red) labeled spot or spotlight. If you find neither, use the spare breaker for something else as it was just part of a prefabricated panel at the time of build.

Go with a wireless unit, handheld remote. You can patch into the windlass wiring and you will be good to go. Easy Peasy, no running of wires. And the wireless ones are super reasonable:
