Transmission Repair Started

Postby RGrew176 » January 13th, 2017, 3:42 am

The marina has finally pulled my boat inside to start the transmission repair. They brought the boat inside yesterday. I spoke with the mechanic yesterday. He said the way the boat is laid out he will have to pull both the engine and transmission in order to work on the transmission.

I asked him since he was working on the port tranny could he also replace the fluid in the starboard tranny. That way I will know that the fluid in both transmissions was replaced at the same time.

He said he will keep me abreast of the repair as it progresses. He expects that the repair will be under 2 K. I do hope so.

Now I can start thinking of spring launch with both transmissions in working condition.

I'm hoping that it is a minor repair. Hope for the best, expect the worst pretty much covers it. Either way it has to be fixed.

Rick if they are pulling the engine and transmission and fixing the transmission for 2k or less, you better buy them about 10 cases of beer for a tip!

I was thinking the same as mine is still in the shop for the SB trans and I'm at $5500, keeping in mind I have a 98 Caver Mariner and anything engine\Trans related is a PITA!!!

Well, the transmission has been fixed. Looking forward to spring now that I will be able to use both engines as intended.

The final cost parts and labor, $2355.18. A bit more than quoted early on but I am satisfied with the final cost of the repairs. I did add on to have the fluid in the starboard transmission changed at the same time. I figure that if one transmission died just how long will the other one run before it needs to be repaired. Hoping the transmission fluid change in the other transmission will buy me some time. Now I know when both had fluid changes. Buying the boat used I have no idea when that was last done.

I am told by people at the marina who knew the previous owner that he was pretty anal about maintenance of the boat while he owned it and it does show.

Looking forward to launching sometime between April 1st and 15th. Come on spring.

The clutches were fused and there was some other part that needed replacement. I forget what they called it.
