View the latest post Attachment(s) multi alternator / multi battery bank charger

Just completed an upgrade to my 1994 Carver 370 Aft Cabin to add a small "house" bank of batteries. Boat originally came with start batteries for each engine + generator. However it was configured such that both engines started and ran on whichever battery was selected from the master switch. This also meant that both alternators were shorted together - really bad if on fails, the other is also not long for this world. Anyway... got into the bilge and re-positioned the existing batteries toward the bow to make room for a pair of group 27 deep cycle batteries. Swapped the master switch for a dual switch: (https://www.bluesea.com/products/6011/m ... itch_-_Red). Now start batteries for port and starboard just go to each engine. I added a Promarine battery isolator (ProIsoCharge130 2•4) to isolate / combine outputs or each alternator. This unit monitors up to 4 battery banks and directs charge to lowest bank (after topping off 1st start battery). On my boat there was a single pole switch to turn off battery to the generator. I left this one in place with a second dual switch with house and generator battery routed there first. Both these switches have to on to juice the generator. This new set-up allows me to turn off all banks with just house bank working. Should note that house power to breaker panel is normally connected to the main battery switch. The input to the two 50A breakers must now come from the house bank switch. System is finally installed and seems to be working flawlessly. Must give a shout out to Lucas Landry with Promariner for helping translate / interpret the installation instruction (manual is not great). Longer term plan is to route the house bank to a small 2000-2500W inverter to allow the coffeepot to run without starting the generator. I'm an old sailboater and am used to spending days on the hook without generator or running the engine (small electrical footprint). Of course the motor yacht does not ventilate as well as my old Hunter 36 sail boat so we will see if I can live without AC in North AL. Attached is a .jpg file showing the new battery configuration. Also added a remote battery watering system since the batteries are a major PITA to access for checking electrolyte levels. Know that I only have ~100 AH of house capacity (drawing less than 50%) but now that infrastructure is in place adding additional batteries is straight forwards once I make some mounting provisions.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Ready--------Set--------Launch

Image

There she is sitting in the slings waiting for my 4 PM Wednesday appointment to launch. They look so much bigger out of the water.

Image

There she is edging ever so slowly towards the water.

Image

Splashdown, let the season begin.

Once she was in the water I tried to start her up. No, go just a clicking sound. I tried jumping the battery still no go, click,c lick, click. I connected my battery charger to the forward battery. Within a few seconds it showed a full charge. I pulled the aft battery, what a bear to get at. I let it charge for 1/2 hour, no advance on the chargers light bar. It was a NAPA battery so I headed off to the local NAPA store. I had the guy test the battery and it was stone cold dead. I wanted to get 2 of them even though the forward battery showed a full charge but they only had 1 in stock. $98 dollars later I walked out with a new battery a Group 24. That is what the old battery was. I was in no mood to try to muscle in a Group 27 or 29 battery into that aft slot. No way.

I got back to the boat and installed the new battery. I hit the ignition key to the port engine. It fired right up. Then I fired of the starboard engine. I let them warm up for about 10 minutes then I pulled away from the launch area. I was fortunate that there was no one with an appointment to launch after me. I headed down the channel and out into Lake Erie. I wanted to run the boat for 20 minutes or so. I throttled up to WOT and both engines maxed out at 4200 RPM. After a short WOT run I throttled back and turned back towards Bolles Harbor. I then motored back towards Trouts Yacht Basin my summer home. I got safely into my dock and tied off the lines. I hooked up to the shore power and thought, lets begin the season.

I did some puttering around in the boat. I flushed out most of the pink stuff. I will finish that later today. Turned on the A/C and enjoyed the cool inside temperatures. I did drive over to Monroe Boat Club for a couple of Rum and Cokes before heading back to the boat where I am spending the night. I was not sure if I was staying or going back home. But, what the heck, I decided to stay aboard.

View the latest post Led replacements for G4 Halogens

I have tried a few offshore LED replacements for my 10W, side pin, G4 halogens on the interior of my boat. They were either too dim or too yellow (or both). I am looking for warm white replacements at a reasonable price since there are so many to replace.

Any user approved suggestions?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi folks Jono from Aussieland all right can't spell Australia.
Went to USA June 2013 for 5 weeks, great country, met some great people there. Went back in Nov/Dec to buy a boat, traveled from LA to a John Denver song on the east coast (can't remember the song) drove back towards Houston to clearlake where we saw" 5 o"clock somewhere" then onto somewhere close to Sacramento to look at another 396 carver but she had 2 shot engines and they were 280hp they had hyped up the fuel pumps to perform. instead of 370s as advertised. Owners wouldn't come to repair agreement so I guess they still own the craft.

We purchased it's" 5'oclock Somewhere" and arranged local Houston people to do the mechanical and hull surveys.
The hull survey written report I quote "bilge pumps working , air conditioners working, engine oil removal system working, fuel transfer pump working.
Bilge pumps burnt out casings cracked wires cut, air conditioners seawater pump rusted out seized, engine oil removal system not working, fuel transfer pump not working.
Mechanical survey, written report both engines for age working all normal, port motor seized when arrived at Fremantle (port for Perth).

We have repaired all and put new clears and shade, still have to replace roof with new heavey weight canvas as black USA canvas too light, it leaks, happening soon. All good, craft is very well built with plenty of room for our needs and motors well in our seas. we love the craft it will be our last one as we are both 69.

Well thats all folks take care from Aussie John (Jono)

View the latest post Starboard Engine Overheating at Idle, cools down throttling up

Hi Fellas,

The starboard engine is overheating after awhile at idle, but when I throttle up she pops back down to 165-170. I looked at the water flow from the exhaust-The port engine looks great and the starboard water flow is much less. Impellers? That is what I was thinking. I touched the manifolds and risers and the risers are not hot to the touch(But I'm eyeing them next).

I was quoted 3 hours of labor today to change them. (I am thinking to change them out for both engines), and the impeller kits were $100 each. Total about $530.00 Sound reasonable?

You guys that are super knowledgeable and are our protection against the bad guys :-).

View the latest post Attachment(s) Long Weekend Shakedown cruise

We had a 5 boat flotilla for the weekend and left Port Severn at about 3pm on Saturday to spend the night at the Waubic Restaurant. Two Carvers, 2 Regals and a Searay in the flotilla. We went over Big Chute Marine Railway and made our way to the Waubic. Anyone who is up this way or is doing the loop, the Waubic is a must stop. Just be advised, they only have 30a service - so if you are like me with 50A, you will be on the genny for the night.

Up and off early Sunday to go back over the Chute and through Lock 45 to end up in Midland. Stayed at the town dock here and the flotilla had a great BBQ on my boat.

It was the first May long weekend that I can remember that the weather was perfect.

View the latest post 2001 Carver 396 Aft Cabin Bow Ladder

I have a 2001 Carver 396 Aft Cabin and wondering if anyone else out there has put a bow ladder on one of these. This year's model has a 3 rail railing on the bow and it leans outward. Too high to step over. Thought of hinging the top rail but it still leans outward and would still be difficult. Hoping someone has done this with a 2001 and can provide some pointers. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

View the latest post Accerelation issues

New member an I have a 2001 410 sportsman, which is the same hull as a 2004 420 mariner with volvo TAMD 63 diesiels. The boat bogs down when you try to get on plane. My 2004 had vents to break the vacuum of the rear platform. my 2001 does not and the boat suffers and bogs down when accelerating. Is there a fix for this or a kit?
