- Posted by: g36 » May 12th, 2024, 8:11 pm
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
On my 405 been doing some spring maintenance including shaft alignment, oil and all the other checks etc.I've not had any issues with my shaft logs getting hot but this weekend I've found my stbd is getting up to 100f using my infared thermometer aimed at the top of the nut the hottest part i meaured. . I was on a real slow short cruise we, shut it down and came back on 1 engine. I've never had the traditional drip as my Trojan F32 had on its packing. so ive kept a pretty close eye on this. My Port is still nice and cool with really no drips (never had)when running. Again I've never had a problem so I have no clue what packing that they currently have. I have tried adjusting the nuts and did back it off but temp was still warm so I've decided it's time to repack it. I know the shaft size is 1.5 and the packing should be 1/4. What I am interested in is recommended packing material to install in it, I will remove all of what's in there . What are your guys thoughts about this? And the packing type to use?

Hello
I just wanted to introduce myself to the community. I have bought a 2004 Carver 360 Mariner. Currently under shrink-wrap on the St Lawrence seaway and hoping to sail it to its home on the Georgian bay in a few weeks. May ask for tips etc. Thanks Gemini K

Over the years, the steering on our 1984 3207 has been getting harder and harder to turn the wheel. I'm pretty good at mechanical stuff - I replaced both engines with GT40 marine engines several years ago - but I'm not sure where to start with the steering issue. I added air to the reservoir last year, which helped a little, but now it's worse than before. I've done a search on this site, but haven't yet found a thread that helps me diagnose and repair the steering. Our boat has an upper helm as well as one in the salon. Can someone point me towards a solution for the hard steering?

I have a bad ignition and several other switches & guages that are failing. I plan to replace all of them with better quality switches & guages that are backlit and built to last . I like rocker switches but good quality toggles have some nostalgia value . Just looking for advice from anyone that has done this . The wiring harnesses look good but the additions and changes over the years are a mess. Why do mfg not give you a serivice loop so you have room on the harness to actully work on it. I will go back to the main connectors on the harness and create one that covers everything and leaves some slack .
I am thiking that I will just get a local machine shop to cut new backpanels -
1. Any suggestions on material ? Stainless , Starboard or other ?
2. Are the ignitiion switches just universal 3 position marine ?
3. Any reccomendations on shifters & throttles ?
4. Electrical connection suggestions - Crimp on switches Amphenol on harnesses?
Thanks so much ! So far I am loving this boat !

- Forum: General Boating Discussion
The discussion about the generator not producing power got me thinking about how many of you use a checklist for the regular operation of the boat. In my Navy days we had a checklist for everything, including flushing the toilet. For each of the boats I've owned over the years I've put together a checklist for day to day operation. This is the one I currently follow for Alanna Mo Cree:

Everyone is welcome to make a copy and modify it for their own use. I'm also open to any feedback on things I may have captured incorrectly or could be done more efficiently.

View the latest post Disassemble 355 aft cabin night table/stand
- Posted by: PaulH » May 8th, 2024, 3:05 pm
- Forum: Gas Engines/Transmissions
I am looking for any insights into how to disassemble the night table/stand in the aft cabin of a 1997 Carver 355.
I am trying to gain access to the starboard rudder shaft stuffing box, which would be accessible, if the night table can be removed and subsequently re-installed.
If there is an alternative way to access the starboard rudder shaft stuffing box, I would also appreciate any insights into how best to do this without cutting through the wall of the aft head.
Thanks in advance!

The old gal goes into the water Tuesday.
I am switching over to all AGM batteries. I just do not want to keep checking battery water. I have a 4D AGM odyssey for starting, 2 Interstate AGM 6V GC batteries (in series) for house, and a group 24 Odyssey battery for Genset (Kohler with Honda 2-cylinder engine).
To make this work so all batteries are not jammed in there together, I need to move the Gen Set battery. I was thinking of moving it to either under the dinette set where the water heater and forward A/C is. Should I be concerned of fumes building here for a battery explosion?
Or to the forward bilge (in the galley) of my 390CPMY. Yes, I would run new heavier cables to the Gen Set to offset the distance. Only other thing I thought of was putting the 4D under the aft bed with the A/C and that in my opinion is NOT a good idea as to get it would be hard in a situation, and too much "out of site/Out of mind."
Thanks as always!
